Change is a word that brings out both joy and angst in people. Although I have worked as your CEO for less than 60 days, my staff and I have been extremely busy. Along with that work comes a certain amount of change so that MCCA continues to thrive.
MCCA used to have five separate Employer of Choice Award winners in each region of the United States. This approach no longer became feasible financially or logistically, so five years ago, we merged all of our EOCs into one night: the Diversity Honors Gala. Along the same vein with the Thomas L. Sager Awards, we used to hand out five awards—one to a law firm based in each region of the U.S. This year we will give out one Thomas L. Sager Award at our Diversity Honors Gala. We will pick the final awardee from three finalists and announce the winner the night of the Diversity Honors Gala on July 19. You can find details about the Diversity Gala at www.mcca.com/gala.
We’ve also changed our CLE Expo. Starting this October, it will be replaced by the Global TEC (Technology, Education, Careers) Forum. The Forum brings you the unique opportunity to come together and discuss the most current trends, opportunities and challenges facing the corporate legal and law firm communities today. It will be an opportunity for our members to showcase their talent. In addition, we are focused on changing the landscape of the legal profession by improving the diversity stats we see each year in the MCCA/Vault and General Counsel surveys. To improve those numbers in our law firms and corporate legal departments, we will offer training to our members. New Orleans is still our host city on October 6 and 7 and I hope to see you there. Generational diversity is key to a thriving organization. So, to tap into our future, we’ve created the N-Gen (Next Generation) Advisory Board. Our call for nominations went out in early May. The purpose of this advisory board is to encourage collaboration of law firm and in-house leaders who will drive the conversation to inspire change within our profession while also developing the next generation of leaders. Maybe one day, one of our LMJ Scholars will sit on our N-Gen Advisory Board.
As we publish one of our most popular issues each year, the May/June issue of Diversity & the Bar® showcases the future of a diverse legal profession. Fifteen law students who now comprise the MCCA LMJ Scholar class of 2015-16 are helping to expand the legal profession’s diversity pipeline. Since 2004, MCCA, through the generosity of donors like you, has handed out more than $2.85 million in scholarships to diverse individuals who are outstanding scholars, have an interest in corporate law and possess a real commitment to diversity and inclusion.
