Comcast Named Employer of Choice by Minority Corporate Counsel Association

WASHINGTON – The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has named the Legal Department of Comcast Cable Communications as its 2013 Employer of Choice Award winner for the Mid-Atlantic Region. Comcast was selected from law department applicants of corporations across the Mid-Atlantic for demonstrating a commitment to diversity and creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace. The company will be recognized at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala in September.
MCCA selected the Comcast Cable Legal Department (CCLD) for its longstanding practice of promoting diversity and equal opportunity at every level of the department. In recruiting, the CCLD assembles a diverse slate of candidates for each new position, and seeks prospects from diverse bar associations. The department participates in mentoring programs to support women and diverse students, and as a member of the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group hires diverse summer associates and provides cross-training for these associates with outside law firms. The CCLD is a founding member of the Inclusion Initiative, which seeks to increase business opportunities for women- and minority-owned law firms. The department also monitors its partner law firms for their use of diverse attorneys on Comcast matters.
“Comcast shows what can be accomplished through a concerted commitment to diversity,” said Joseph K. West, MCCA’s President and CEO. “From recruitment to mentoring to outreach, Comcast creates opportunities for diverse attorneys in and outside of its organization. These efforts are reflected in the fact that a majority of CCLD’s attorneys are minority and women.”
“Diversity and inclusion has been at the core of Comcast’s culture since its founding 50 years ago, and we are honored by this award,” said Doug Gaston, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Comcast Cable. “We believe that embracing our team’s diverse perspectives and experiences helps us to deliver best-in-class business solutions and makes us a more innovative, forward-thinking legal team.”
Comcast and four other regional winners will be honored at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala at the Lincoln Center in New York City on September 17. The evening will begin with a red-carpet reception followed by the awards program in the Starr Theater that combines honors with entertainment, ending with an elegant VIP Reception in Alice Tully Hall. MCCA will also present the George B. Vashon Innovator Award to corporate legal departments and law firms or legal associations that implement outstanding diversity programs. During the reception, one individual will be honored with MCCA’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
